Why Is Crypto Mixed Today? Fed Holds Rates but Hawkish Dissents Limit Bitcoin’s Bounce

Crypto is mixed after the Fed held rates: Bitcoin edged up, but hawkish dissents, conflicting market-cap data and weak confirmation limit the rally.

Historical market snapshot: 28 October 2026, checked at 19:57 CET. Source edition prepared at 20:00 CET. The prices and technical scenarios below describe that snapshot, not live market data.

Crypto is mixed today after the Federal Reserve kept U.S. interest rates unchanged. Bitcoin was near $80,944, up 0.50% over 24 hours, and 15 of 20 measured major non-stablecoin assets were higher. That looks positive at first glance, but it was not a confirmed broad rally: CoinGecko showed total crypto capitalization down 2.09%, while CoinPaprika showed it up 0.80% on a different asset universe.

The Fed decision was expected. The more important new information was the 10–2 vote: Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack preferred a quarter-point rate increase. Bitcoin briefly moved around $81,000 after the announcement but showed no decisive breakout. The safest conclusion is therefore mixed or sideways, not “crypto is soaring” and not “crypto is crashing.”

Crypto market snapshot

MeasureReadingWhat it says
Bitcoin$80,944; +0.50% in 24hModest gain, below the monitor’s 2% screening level
Bitcoin since 00:00 UTC+0.18% on KrakenEssentially flat for the UTC day
Bitcoin since the previous check-0.21%The earlier rebound partly faded
Ethereum$2,352.16; +0.44%Positive but not a strong risk-on move
CoinGecko total market cap$2.730 trillion; -2.09% in 24hPrimary aggregate points down
CoinPaprika total market cap$2.845 trillion; +0.80% in 24hCross-check points up; not averaged with CoinGecko
Breadth15 rising, 5 fallingMost measured assets were positive
CoinGecko 24h volume$64.61 billionUp 2.21% since the prior check, not a major volume surge
Bitcoin dominance59.45%Almost unchanged since the prior check

The two market-cap providers also differed by about 4.20% in level. Different coin coverage, supply estimates and update methods can create this gap. Because price, breadth and total capitalization did not all agree, this report does not force a “broad rise” or “broad decline” label.

Why is crypto going up today?

There are three limited supports for the coins that were higher.

First, the Fed did not deliver a surprise rate increase. Its official statement kept the federal-funds target at 3.75%–4.00%. Avoiding an immediate hike removed one short-term risk for speculative assets such as crypto.

Second, most large coins participated. Solana gained 1.13%, Dogecoin 1.54%, Chainlink 1.72%, Litecoin 3.05% and LEO 4.30%. That breadth is healthier than a Bitcoin-only spike, although the gains were generally small.

Third, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $176.0 million of net inflows on 27 October, according to Farside Investors. An ETF flow is money entering or leaving exchange-traded funds that hold the underlying asset. Positive flows can support demand, but one session does not establish a durable trend. Spot Ether ETFs simultaneously recorded $60.2 million of net outflows, so institutional demand was not uniformly positive.

These factors are consistent with a modest rebound. They do not prove that the Fed decision caused every gain, and they do not confirm a new bull-market leg.

Why is crypto not clearly up—and why could it turn down?

The Fed’s hold came with a hawkish warning. The statement said inflation remains elevated and upgraded the description of economic growth to a “strong pace.” Two policymakers voted for a 0.25-percentage-point hike. Reuters reported that the wording leaves room for further tightening as officials collect more inflation data.

Higher interest rates can pressure crypto because safer bonds offer more attractive yields and borrowing becomes more expensive. CoinDesk’s immediate reaction report showed Bitcoin only slightly higher after the decision while U.S. Treasury yields rose. That is correlation around the announcement, not proof of a lasting causal relationship.

The primary total-market-cap reading also remained negative even while most measured coins were green. Zcash, Hyperliquid, Cardano, Bitcoin Cash and Rain were lower over 24 hours. Bitcoin Cash fell 1.81% and Rain 2.84%, illustrating that the market was not moving as one block.

Fresh security headlines added caution but did not explain the market move. South Korea’s Financial Services Commission said Bithumb’s employee-support system had been breached, while user-data exposure was still being investigated; no wallet-transfer information or crypto loss had been confirmed. Coinbase said a third-party analytics-vendor incident exposed contact information for a small subset of customers, but its own systems and customer funds were not breached. Neither disclosure produced a verified market-wide price reaction in this check.

Leverage did not show a confirmed market-wide flush

On OKX, Bitcoin-USDT perpetual open interest was about 31,027 BTC, worth roughly $2.47 billion at the reported mark price. Open interest is the value of derivative contracts that remain open. The current eight-hour funding rate was +0.01%; funding is the recurring payment between long and short perpetual-futures traders. Positive funding means longs pay shorts, but this reading was not extreme by itself.

A liquidation is a forced closure of a leveraged position when its margin becomes insufficient. A fresh, methodologically clear market-wide 24-hour liquidation total was not available from a primary endpoint, so this article does not present one as fact. The OKX figures cover one venue and one perpetual contract and should not be mistaken for the whole derivatives market.

What beginners should watch next

The first watchpoint is the Fed’s December path. A hold today does not guarantee another hold. Incoming inflation and growth data can change rate expectations quickly.

The second is Bitcoin’s daily close. A brief move above resistance is less meaningful than a completed daily candle. The market needs a close above roughly $81,800–$82,000 to improve the short-term picture. A close below about $79,100 would weaken it.

The third is confirmation. A more convincing rise would combine higher Bitcoin, higher total capitalization, positive breadth and expanding volume across compatible datasets. This check did not provide all four.

Bitcoin daily technical analysis: Bearish / transitional

The completed 27 October Kraken UTC candle closed at $80,800.90, below the 20-day simple moving average at $81,854.60 and the 50-day average at $81,830.92, but above the 200-day average at $73,024.90. A simple moving average is the mean closing price over the stated number of completed candles.

Daily RSI14 was 45.44. RSI, or Relative Strength Index, measures recent momentum on a 0–100 scale; 45 is neither oversold nor strongly bullish. Volume was 1.06 times the prior 20-day average, but the candle did not close beyond either key zone. The current 28 October candle was incomplete and therefore cannot confirm a breakout or breakdown.

Daily bullish invalidation: a completed close above $82,000 with stronger volume would challenge the bearish/transitional label. Daily bearish confirmation: a completed close below $79,100 would strengthen the downside case.

Bitcoin weekly technical analysis: Bullish recovery under pressure

The completed 19–25 October Kraken week closed at $80,048.50, above the 20-week SMA at $72,368.04 and the 50-week SMA at $76,049.97. Weekly RSI14 was 54.54, still above the neutral midpoint, but recent weekly closes weakened and volume was only 0.86 times the prior 20-week average.

That combination supports a longer-term recovery structure while warning that momentum has softened. A bearish daily phase can exist inside a still-constructive weekly trend. The current 26 October–1 November weekly candle remains incomplete.

FAQs

Did the Fed cut interest rates today?

No. The Fed kept the target range unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%.

Why did Bitcoin not rally strongly after the rate hold?

The hold was widely expected. Two officials preferred a hike, inflation remains elevated and the market is still waiting for clearer guidance on December. Expected news often produces a smaller reaction than a surprise.

Is crypto down today or up today?

Both descriptions are incomplete. Bitcoin and most measured major assets were slightly higher, but the primary total-market-cap series was lower and providers disagreed. “Mixed or sideways” is the evidence-matching classification.
