Market snapshot: 24 October 2026, checked at 20:03 CEST. The source edition was updated at 20:10 CEST. The figures below describe that snapshot, not live prices.
Crypto is broadly lower today. Bitcoin traded near $80,205, down 1.61% over the rolling 24 hours, while 17 of 20 measured major non-stablecoin assets declined. CoinGecko estimated total crypto capitalization at $2.700 trillion, down 4.63% over 24 hours. CoinMarketCap independently showed a smaller 2.15% market-cap decline and Bitcoin near $80,055, down 1.82%. The sources agree on direction but use different coverage and calculation methods, so their figures are kept separate.
The important new development is a sharper Middle East risk signal. Reuters reported on 24 October that U.S. intelligence warned Iranian plots against Americans had reached “advanced stages.” The State Department ordered non-emergency staff and families to leave U.S. diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia and updated advisories across the region. CoinDesk reported Bitcoin briefly below $80,000 as the news circulated.
What changed in this update: Bitcoin fell only 0.48% since the previous check, but the market reached new multi-week lows, altcoin losses deepened and fresh geopolitical information supplied a credible risk-off catalyst. Timing and cross-asset weakness make the link plausible, but they do not prove that the security news alone caused every crypto price move.
Crypto market snapshot

| Bitcoin dominance | 59.61% | Down 0.48 percentage points since prior check |
Rolling 24 hours is the primary meaning of “today.” Since-midnight movement uses Kraken’s incomplete UTC Bitcoin candle and is reported separately.
The classification is broad decline led by altcoins because Bitcoin, both total-cap providers and 85% of the measured assets moved lower. However, CoinGecko’s aggregate volume was also down 3.44%, so the sell-off lacks full volume confirmation.
Why is crypto down today?
No single cause is proven. The strongest new evidence is a worsening geopolitical backdrop layered on top of weak fund flows and fragile risk sentiment.
Reuters reported that the U.S. Director of National Intelligence warned of substantially increased Iranian efforts to target U.S. personnel. The State Department also adjusted staffing and advisories for more than a dozen Gulf and Middle Eastern countries. President Donald Trump separately raised the possibility of renewed military action against Iran after the U.S. midterm elections, according to CoinDesk’s market report.
That matters because a wider conflict can lift oil prices, strengthen demand for defensive assets and reduce appetite for volatile investments. U.S. stocks had already ended Friday lower while oil rose amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions. Bitcoin then slipped to a more-than-one-month low during thinner weekend trading, when fewer orders can amplify price moves.
This is evidence of correlation and plausible timing, not proof of direct causation. Crypto also entered the weekend with its own negative background: completed U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF data showed $137.9 million of net outflows on 23 October after $635.6 million left on 22 October. An ETF flow is the net money entering or leaving exchange-traded funds during a session. Two consecutive outflow days indicate softer institutional demand, but funds can react to prices as well as influence them.
Why is crypto not falling even faster?
There are counter-signals. Bitcoin recovered from Kraken’s intraday low near $79,121 to about $80,205 at the check. Total crypto capitalization increased 0.38% since the previous check even though its rolling 24-hour comparison remained negative. That means the market stabilized somewhat after the sharpest part of the sell-off.
Ethereum ETF flows also diverged from Bitcoin: the completed 23 October row showed a small $4.4 million inflow after a $110.6 million outflow one day earlier. These figures do not make the market bullish, but they argue against describing every source of regulated demand as uniformly negative.
Bitcoin and altcoins: losses remain broad
Altcoins carried most of the damage. Ethereum lost 3.50%, Solana 3.76%, Dogecoin 4.22%, Chainlink 5.02%, Cardano 5.23%, Litecoin 4.73% and Uniswap 6.84%. Zcash fell 7.00%, while NEAR dropped 9.19%. Monero, UNUS SED LEO and Rain were the only positive assets in the 20-coin screen.
The breadth is more important than any single token. When 85% of major assets fall while Bitcoin and total market capitalization also decline, the move is broader than an isolated altcoin event. Bitcoin’s smaller loss nevertheless shows that the market’s largest asset held up better than many alternatives.
Leverage and trading confirmation
On Hyperliquid, Bitcoin perpetual open interest was about $3.51 billion, down 1.65% since the previous check. Open interest is the value of active derivatives positions. Funding—the periodic payment between long and short perpetual traders—was mildly positive at 0.00125% per hour, meaning longs paid shorts on that venue.
A liquidation is a forced closure of a leveraged position when collateral becomes insufficient. A dependable market-wide 24-hour liquidation total was not available from the accessible primary dashboard, so no such figure is presented as current. Hyperliquid data is venue-specific and cannot represent the entire derivatives market.
What beginners should watch next
- The $79,100-$80,000 zone: Support is an area where buyers previously interrupted a decline. A completed daily close below it would strengthen the bearish signal.
- The $81,800-$83,000 area: Resistance is an area where sellers previously interrupted a rise. A completed close above it would be an early repair signal.
- Middle East headlines and oil: Further confirmed escalation could keep risk appetite weak; de-escalation could remove part of the pressure.
- ETF follow-through: Another large completed outflow would reinforce weak-demand evidence. A strong inflow would challenge it.
- Volume and breadth: A deeper decline with expanding volume and more than 60% of majors falling would offer stronger confirmation than price alone.
Bitcoin technical analysis: daily
Classification: Bearish / transitional.
Kraken’s completed 23 October UTC candle closed at $81,086.20, below the 20-day simple moving average at $82,827.44 and the 50-day average at $81,777.05, but above the 200-day average at $72,855.84. Daily RSI(14) was 45.26. RSI, or relative strength index, measures the balance of recent gains and losses; this reading is weak-neutral, not deeply oversold.
The completed candle made a lower high and lower low, but volume was only 0.65 times the preceding 20-day average. The current 24 October candle is incomplete and traded as low as $79,120.80 before recovering. An intraday break is not a confirmed breakdown. A completed close below $79,100 would confirm deterioration; a close above $83,000 would be an early repair.
Bitcoin technical analysis: weekly
Classification: Bullish recovery under pressure.
The latest completed week, 12-18 October, closed at $82,001.70, above the 20-week average at $71,531.00 and the 50-week average at $76,543.59. Weekly RSI(14) was 57.12. The completed week nevertheless produced a lower high and lower low.
The 19-25 October candle is incomplete and cannot confirm a breakdown. A completed weekly close below $79,100-$80,000 would damage the recovery structure. A close above $84,250-$87,000 would improve it. A bearish daily correction can coexist with a still-bullish weekly trend because the timeframes measure different periods.
FAQs
Is crypto crashing today?
The market is broadly lower and Bitcoin briefly broke $80,000, but it fell only 0.48% since the prior check and recovered part of the intraday drop. The evidence supports a broad decline, not a guaranteed new crash.
Did Middle East tensions cause Bitcoin to fall?
They are a plausible contributor because the security warning preceded the weekend low and other risk assets were already under pressure. Direct causation is not proven.
Is Bitcoin’s weekly trend bearish now?
Not yet. Completed weekly indicators remain above their 20- and 50-week averages. The current weekly candle is incomplete.
