Historical market snapshot: 30 October 2026, 04:03 CET (03:03 UTC). Source edition prepared at 04:15 CET. Prices and technical levels below describe that observation, not live prices. Binance’s preliminary incident announcement was checked before publication; the reviewed sources did not confirm restored withdrawals or a completed technical post-mortem.

Crypto is falling broadly today after Binance disclosed a major security incident, suspended deposits and withdrawals, and said unauthorized transactions may have caused an estimated $6.3 billion impact. Bitcoin was about $77,362 at the market check, down 3.19% over 24 hours and 4.25% from this monitor's previous successful check. The decline is not limited to Bitcoin: total crypto capitalization and 16 of the 20 measured major non-stablecoin assets were also lower.

This is a broad decline, not simply a temporary Bitcoin dip. Binance says roughly $3 billion of affected assets has already been frozen and that it will cover losses, but its investigation is still incomplete. The company has not yet published the promised technical post-mortem or updated proof of reserves.

Crypto market snapshot

CoinGecko was used as the primary market provider. CoinPaprika was kept as a separate cross-check because the two services cover the market differently.

CoinPaprika put Bitcoin at $77,240, down 3.10%, which closely confirmed the price and direction. Its total-cap estimate was $2.718 trillion, down 3.11%. That capitalization was about 4.02% higher than CoinGecko's, and the reported decline was 2.51 percentage points smaller. These figures are not averaged because their asset coverage and methodology differ.

Why is crypto down today?

1. Binance reported unauthorized withdrawals

Binance's official update says its initial investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. The company says an attacker may have used access to a service container to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance estimates the total impact at about $6.3 billion and says approximately $3 billion has been frozen on-chain.

Important caveat: this is an initial finding, not a completed forensic report. Binance says it has found no evidence that wallet private keys leaked. It temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, revoked the affected address authorization, engaged law enforcement and promised a detailed post-mortem.

Binance says users' funds are safe and that losses will be covered by its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, and company funds. That promise does not replace the pending reserve update or technical investigation.

2. The timing links the incident to the deeper selloff

Bitcoin had already been weak because of technology-stock pressure, elevated inflation and the Federal Reserve's hawkish dissents. The Binance incident was therefore a new catalyst layered on an existing risk-off market.

Bitcoin was near $80,800 shortly before reports of abnormal Binance outflows spread, then fell below $79,000. Reuters reported Bitcoin at a six-week low of $77,646, Ether at a two-month low and BNB down more than 8%.

This timing supports the conclusion that the security incident intensified the decline. It does not prove that every percentage point of the move came from Binance; macro and technology-sector pressure were already present.

3. Leveraged traders amplified the move

A liquidation is the forced closure of a leveraged position when its collateral can no longer cover losses. The Block, citing CoinGlass, reported approximately $1.55 billion of crypto liquidations over 24 hours, including $1.34 billion in long positions—trades betting on higher prices. The estimate is dynamic and was not independently reconstructed by this monitor.

On OKX's BTC-USDT perpetual contract, open interest rose to 34,849 BTC, about 13.8% above the previous check, while price fell. Open interest measures outstanding derivatives positions; that combination can indicate new bearish positioning, though it cannot identify every trader's direction.

OKX funding was positive 0.01% per eight hours. Funding is a recurring payment between perpetual-futures traders; positive funding means longs pay shorts. These figures cover one contract, not the whole market.

Bitcoin, Ether and major altcoins

The selloff was broad. Ether fell 4.29% to $2,211, BNB lost 5.26% to $710, XRP declined 5.61% to $1.22 and Solana fell 4.48% to $95.53. Chainlink, Cardano, Dogecoin and Litecoin were also lower.

Exceptions included Hyperliquid (+16.00%), Tron (+6.34%), Monero (+3.00%) and Zcash (+1.48%). They do not change the classification because Bitcoin, total capitalization and 80% of measured assets fell.

Why is some crypto going up today?

The winners appear to reflect asset-specific demand rather than a market-wide recovery. Hyperliquid's rise and Tron's strength show that capital did not leave every part of crypto equally. However, a few positive tokens cannot support a “crypto is going up” headline while the market's largest assets, total capitalization and breadth are decisively negative.

Breadth measures how many assets participate. Today it is weak despite several sharp individual gains.

What to watch next

The first operational test is whether Binance restores deposits and withdrawals after completing security checks. The second is its promised technical post-mortem: investors need verified details on the access failure, affected assets, recoveries and remediation. The planned proof-of-reserves update will matter because Binance says it will replace losses.

Price confirmation is equally important. A short bounce would not erase the breakdown. Watch whether Bitcoin can reclaim $79,100 and then $80,000–$81,900 on a daily closing basis. On the downside, the $76,000–$76,300 area is close to the current weekly 50-week average and the overnight low. A decisive close below it would weaken the longer-term recovery structure.

Farside-attributed data showed modest 29 October net outflows of $15.3 million from Bitcoin ETFs and $21.1 million from Ether ETFs. They are background, not the main explanation.

Bitcoin technical analysis: daily

Classification: Bearish.

The completed 29 October Kraken BTC/USD candle closed at $77,800, below the 20-day simple moving average (SMA) at $81,596.80 and the 50-day SMA at $81,877.90. It remained above the 200-day SMA at $73,101.27. RSI14 was 35.96: weak, but not yet below the commonly watched oversold level of 30. Volume was 1.94 times the preceding 20-day average, which confirms that the breakdown had meaningful participation.

The incomplete 30 October UTC candle traded between $76,330.10 and $78,075.50 before the technical-data snapshot. Support is an area where buyers have previously appeared; resistance is an area where selling has appeared. Initial support is $76,000–$76,300, followed by the 200-day average near $73,100. Initial resistance is $77,700–$79,100, then the moving-average cluster around $81,600–$81,900.

A completed daily close back above $79,100 would be an early stabilization signal. A close above the 20- and 50-day averages would be stronger evidence. A close below $76,000 would keep the bearish sequence of lower lows intact. The current daily candle is incomplete and cannot confirm either scenario.

Bitcoin technical analysis: weekly

Classification: Bullish recovery under severe pressure.

The last completed weekly candle, covering 19–25 October UTC, closed at $80,048.50. That remained above the 20-week SMA at $72,368.04 and the 50-week SMA at $76,049.97; weekly RSI14 was 54.51. Those completed-candle readings preserve the broader recovery structure.

However, the current 26 October–1 November candle is incomplete and has already made a lower low near $76,330. A weekly close below the 50-week average would make the structure transitional rather than clearly bullish. A later close below the 20-week average would invalidate the recovery more decisively. Conversely, reclaiming $79,100 and then $81,900 would reduce immediate downside pressure; a move above $84,840 would be needed to challenge the recent weekly high.
