Crypto is mixed rather than clearly rising or falling today. Bitcoin traded near $80,265, down about 0.25% over the rolling 24 hours, while 12 of 20 measured major non-stablecoin assets were higher. CoinGecko nevertheless showed total crypto capitalization down 2.27%, whereas CoinPaprika measured a much smaller 0.05% decline. The providers agree that Bitcoin is almost flat, but their different coverage makes the size of the market-cap move uncertain.
The most important new crypto-specific development is separate from the price action: Electrum has fixed a high-severity Bitcoin wallet vulnerability that developers say was exploited in the wild. Every Electrum version before 4.8.3 is affected. At least one user lost bitcoin after a malicious server substituted a fraudulent transaction and the user approved a fee increase. There is no evidence that this wallet incident caused the wider market's mixed performance.
Crypto market snapshot
| Asset | Price | Rolling 24h change |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | $80,265 | -0.25% |
| Ethereum (ETH) | $2,328.80 | -0.30% |
| BNB | $741.87 | +0.01% |
| XRP | $1.29 | -0.43% |
| Solana (SOL) | $101.54 | +0.43% |
| Tron (TRX) | $0.3304 | +0.43% |
| Dogecoin (DOGE) | $0.0771 | +0.58% |
| Cardano (ADA) | $0.2049 | +0.05% |
Bitcoin was up 0.18% since 00:00 UTC on Kraken and up 0.86% since the previous market check. CoinGecko's total capitalization had recovered 0.76% since the previous check, even though its rolling 24-hour figure remained negative. Bitcoin dominance was 60.05%.
Breadth was modestly positive: 12 of the 20 measured major assets rose, while eight fell. That is exactly 60% positive breadth, but Bitcoin and both providers' total-cap figures were still negative. The correct classification is therefore mixed or sideways, not a broad rise.
CoinGecko reported approximately $55.1 billion in 24-hour market volume, up 3.12%. CoinPaprika reported $73.9 billion and a 7.07% decline. These totals are not interchangeable because providers include different assets and venues, so they are shown separately rather than averaged.
Why is crypto down today?
For readers seeing red prices, the short answer is that Bitcoin and Ethereum remain slightly lower over the rolling 24-hour window, while CoinGecko's aggregate market-cap reading is more negative. The latest completed Bitcoin daily candle also closed below its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, which signals weaker short-term momentum.
Macro conditions remain cautious rather than decisively risk-on. Reuters reported that investors are preparing for central-bank decisions, large technology earnings and inflation data. Brent crude fell about 1.8%, but the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remained near 5%. These conditions can influence speculative assets, yet they do not prove why every crypto price moved.
The latest completed U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flow—money entering or leaving exchange-traded funds—was a $137.9 million net outflow on 23 October, according to Farside Investors. That was already known before this check and is background, not a new catalyst.
Why is crypto going up today?
The market is not broadly rising, but several altcoins have recovered. Uniswap gained about 4.03%, Bitcoin Cash 2.06% and Near Protocol 1.97% over 24 hours. Solana, Tron, Dogecoin and Chainlink were also positive. Bitcoin itself had recovered about 0.86% from the previous check and was slightly higher since midnight UTC.
Falling oil prices and slightly firmer global equities offered some relief to risk sentiment. However, the gains were uneven, aggregate market-cap readings remained negative and Bitcoin stayed close to $80,000. This is a stabilization attempt, not a confirmed market-wide breakout.
Electrum wallet exploit: what happened?
Electrum's official security advisory labels the vulnerability high severity and says some malicious servers were already using it. The affected software is every version earlier than 4.8.3; version 4.8.3 contains the patch.
Electrum is a lightweight Bitcoin wallet. Instead of downloading and independently checking the entire Bitcoin blockchain, it can use outside Electrum servers to obtain transaction information. The attack abused trust in the main server's report about an unconfirmed transaction.
Here is the simplified sequence:
1. A user sent a legitimate Bitcoin payment through a malicious server. 2. The server withheld that payment and showed the wallet a conflicting transaction that paid the attacker. 3. The false transaction initially contained invalid signatures, but older Electrum clients displayed it as pending without checking them. 4. If the user manually increased the fee with Replace-by-Fee, the wallet could sign a valid replacement that sent the bitcoin to the attacker.
Replace-by-Fee is a normal Bitcoin feature that lets a user replace an unconfirmed transaction with a new version carrying a higher network fee. In this attack, that useful feature became the moment when the fraudulent payment could receive a valid signature.
Electrum received two private user reports. The first arrived on 11 October; the second user reported a financial loss on 18 October. Developers tagged the fixed release on 23 October, published binaries on 24 October and disclosed the issue publicly the same day. The amount stolen and the malicious servers' identities remain undisclosed. CoinDesk independently reported that at least one theft was confirmed.
What Electrum users should do
Users should upgrade to Electrum 4.8.3 or later through the official Electrum website and verify the download signature when possible. Before signing any payment or fee increase, compare the complete destination address and amount on the signing screen or hardware wallet—not only the first or last few characters. The attackers reportedly generated addresses with the same final four characters as the intended destination.
Electrum says users who connect only to a server they trust, including their own server, were not exposed to this particular attack. Dormant wallets were not drained automatically by the described bug; the confirmed loss involved a user signing a substituted fee-bump transaction. Still, vulnerable software should be updated before it is used again.
Leverage signals remain calm
On Hyperliquid's BTC perpetual market, funding—a recurring payment between long and short traders that helps keep a perpetual contract near the spot price—was mildly positive at about 0.00125% per hour. Open interest was approximately 41,186 BTC, or $3.39 billion, up 0.93% from the previous check. These are venue-specific figures and do not represent the whole derivatives market.
A liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position when its collateral is no longer sufficient. No dependable fresh market-wide liquidation total was accessible for this check, so none is reported.
What beginners should watch next
- Whether Bitcoin can hold the $79,100-$80,000 support area. Support is a zone where buying has previously slowed a decline.
- Whether Bitcoin can close above the $80,900-$81,300 resistance area. Resistance is a zone where selling has previously limited a rise.
- Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision and guidance, because interest-rate expectations can affect demand for risk assets.
- Any additional Electrum loss reports or a broader technical assessment of the malicious-server activity.
FAQs
Is Bitcoin itself hacked?
No evidence indicates that the Bitcoin network or its consensus rules were hacked. The disclosed vulnerability affected Electrum wallet software before version 4.8.3 and its handling of information from a malicious server.
Can Electrum users lose funds without signing anything?
The disclosed attack required the user to sign a substituted transaction, typically while attempting a fee increase. That does not make older versions safe: users should update before signing or broadcasting transactions.
Is crypto down or up today?
It is mixed. Bitcoin and Ethereum were slightly lower over 24 hours, but 12 of 20 measured major assets were higher. Total-cap providers agreed on a negative direction but disagreed sharply about its size.
Bitcoin technical analysis: daily
Classification: Bearish / transitional. The latest completed Kraken daily candle, for 25 October UTC, closed at $80,048.50. That was below the 20-day simple moving average ($82,255.37) and 50-day average ($81,803.36), but above the 200-day average ($72,944.78). Wilder RSI(14) was 41.65, below neutral 50 but not conventionally oversold. Volume was only 0.42 times the previous 20-day average, so the bearish close lacked strong volume confirmation.
The current 26 October candle is incomplete. A completed close below roughly $79,100 would strengthen the bearish case. A completed close above $81,300, followed by recovery of the 20-day and 50-day averages, would weaken it.
Bitcoin technical analysis: weekly
Classification: Bullish recovery under pressure. The completed 19-25 October UTC week closed at $80,048.50, after trading between $79,120.80 and $84,840. It made a higher high but a lower low than the previous week—an outside range—before closing lower. Price remained above the 20-week simple moving average ($72,368.04) and 50-week average ($76,049.97). Weekly Wilder RSI(14) was 54.54, still above neutral.
The current week is incomplete. A weekly close below the $79,100-$80,000 area would mark a more serious breakdown. Holding that zone and later reclaiming $84,800 would improve the longer-term structure. A weak daily trend can exist inside a still-positive weekly recovery; neither scenario guarantees the next move.
