Revolut is no longer simply a prepaid travel card. For European customers, it has become a broad financial platform offering current accounts, payment cards, foreign currencies, savings, investments, cryptocurrency and travel benefits.
That combination is Revolut’s greatest advantage—and its biggest potential weakness. Money held in a Revolut bank account is not treated in the same way as money invested in a Flexible Cash Fund. Shares purchased through Revolut Securities are different from a savings deposit, while cryptocurrency has another legal and risk structure entirely.
This review explains what European customers receive, which fees matter and whether the paid plans offer enough value to justify their monthly cost.
Information was checked on 28 September 2026 using Revolut’s Dutch and European disclosures. Prices, local IBANs, insurance and product availability can differ between European countries.
Key takeaways
- Revolut is strongest for international spending, currency management and frequent travellers.
- The free Standard plan is sufficient for many customers, but it has a €1,000 monthly weekday exchange allowance and €200 ATM allowance.
- Premium, Metal and Ultra remove the monthly currency-exchange fair-usage limit.
- Eligible Dutch-branch deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor through the Lithuanian deposit-insurance scheme.
- Flexible Cash Funds are investments in money-market funds, not bank deposits.
- Revolut offers convenient investing, but specialist brokers provide deeper research and broader market access.
- Crypto balances do not receive bank-deposit protection.

What is Revolut?
Revolut is a digital financial platform combining banking and non-banking services inside one app. European Economic Area banking is generally provided by Revolut Bank UAB, authorised by the European Central Bank and supervised by the Bank of Lithuania. National branches can also fall under local oversight.
Dutch customers are served through Revolut Bank UAB’s Netherlands branch. Investment services are separately provided by Revolut Securities Europe UAB.
Depending on country and eligibility, Revolut offers current and joint accounts, cards, multiple currencies, savings, investments, cryptocurrency, precious-metals exposure, travel benefits, junior accounts and freelance or business services.
Revolut plans and European prices
The following prices and allowances were published for the Netherlands in September 2026.
| Plan | Monthly price | Weekday exchange allowance | Revolut ATM allowance | Free investment orders |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Free | €1,000 | €200 or five withdrawals | None |
| Plus | €3.99 | €3,000 | €200 | None |
| Premium | €10.99 | Unlimited | €400 | Five monthly |
| Metal | €19.99 | Unlimited | €800 | Ten monthly |
| Ultra | €65 introductory price | Unlimited | €2,000 | Ten monthly |
After the ATM allowance, Revolut charges 2% with a minimum of €1. An ATM owner can add a separate charge.
Standard
Standard is the logical starting plan. It provides a current account, virtual card, SEPA payments, multi-currency balances and access to other Revolut services. The first physical card may be free, but delivery can cost extra. Dutch Standard local delivery was listed at €7.99.
Plus
Plus raises the monthly currency allowance to €3,000 and adds purchase protection and family features. Its ATM allowance remains €200, so it is primarily useful for customers exceeding Standard’s currency limit.
Premium
Premium removes the monthly exchange limit and additional weekend exchange fee. It includes five commission-free investment orders, a €400 ATM allowance, higher eligible savings rates, priority support and selected travel or subscription benefits.
For a regular traveller, Premium is the most balanced paid option.
Metal
Metal increases the ATM allowance to €800 and includes ten monthly commission-free investment orders, more subscriptions and travel benefits. The metal card alone does not justify almost €240 per year; the plan only works financially if the other benefits replace expenses the user already has.
Ultra
Ultra targets frequent premium travellers. It includes a €2,000 ATM allowance, airport-lounge and fast-track benefits, Trading Pro, enhanced support, subscriptions and higher eligible savings rates. At the listed introductory price, it costs €780 per year and is difficult to justify for banking alone.
Is Revolut a real bank?
Yes. Revolut Bank UAB is a licensed European bank, although different Revolut companies provide different services. Banking, investing, insurance distribution, crypto and commodities do not necessarily share the same protection.
Customers should always check the legal entity in their account agreement rather than assuming everything shown in one app is a bank product.
Is money at Revolut protected?
Eligible deposits held through Revolut Bank UAB’s Netherlands branch are insured by Lithuania’s Public Institution “Deposit and Investment Insurance”. The standard limit is €100,000 per depositor across eligible deposits held with Revolut Bank UAB, including its Netherlands branch. Joint-account protection applies separately to each eligible holder.
Balances are aggregated. Holding €60,000 in a current account and €50,000 in eligible savings does not create €110,000 of standard protection; the ordinary maximum remains €100,000.
| Product | Structure | Main protection or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Current balance | Bank deposit | Eligible deposit protection up to €100,000 |
| Instant Access Savings | Bank deposit | Deposit protection subject to terms |
| Flexible Cash Funds | Money-market fund | Capital at risk; no bank guarantee |
| Shares and ETFs | Investment | Market risk and investment-service rules |
| Cryptocurrency | Digital asset | Volatility and no ordinary deposit guarantee |
Currency exchange and international spending
Revolut supports numerous currencies and is particularly useful for travel and cross-border income.
Standard users receive €1,000 of monthly weekday currency conversion before a 1% fair-usage fee. Plus users receive €3,000 before a 0.5% fee. Premium, Metal and Ultra have no additional monthly fair-usage limit.
Standard also pays an additional 1% weekend exchange fee, while Plus pays 0.5%. Premium, Metal and Ultra have no additional weekend fee under the current Dutch schedule.
Qualifying crypto and commodities conversions also count towards the monthly exchange allowance, not only currency conversions.
Revolut sets its own variable rate using market data and transaction characteristics. It is not necessarily identical to a central-bank reference rate.
When paying abroad, customers should normally choose the local currency rather than accepting a merchant’s dynamic currency conversion. The merchant’s conversion can be substantially worse.
Revolut savings
Revolut offers Instant Access Savings and Flexible Cash Funds, but they are not interchangeable.
Instant Access Savings is a variable-rate bank deposit. Standard and Plus pay a variable 2% annually on the first €2,500 and 1% above that amount. Premium pays 2% on the first €2,500 and 1.5% above it; Metal pays 2%; Ultra pays 2.5% up to €100,000 and 2% above. Rates can change.
Flexible Cash Funds invest in money-market funds. Their advertised yield is variable and paid after service fees. Capital remains at risk and foreign-currency funds introduce currency risk. Revolut’s published annual service charge on euro Flexible Cash Funds ranged from 0.90% for Standard to 0.05% for Ultra.
Revolut investing review
Revolut provides shares, ETFs, exchange-traded products, bonds, recurring plans and Robo-Advisor services where available.
Its Dutch trading schedule provides zero commission-free orders for Standard and Plus, five for Premium and ten for Metal and Ultra. Additional orders cost 0.10% with no minimum. Revolut lists no custody fee, but currency conversion, regulatory fees, ADR charges and product expenses can apply. Moving a portfolio to another platform costs $35 per position.
Selected recurring ETF or ETP purchases can be commission-free through the investment-plan feature.
Revolut is suitable for beginners making small investments. DEGIRO, Trading 212 and Trade Republic can be stronger for investors needing broader market access, portfolio automation or specialist instruments.
Revolut cryptocurrency
Revolut offers hundreds of cryptocurrencies, recurring purchases and price-triggered orders. Main-app crypto trades use tiered percentage fees and minimum charges, making small transactions potentially expensive.
Revolut X is the advanced exchange interface. Its published fee structure is 0% maker and 0.09% taker, making it more competitive for active crypto trading than instant purchases in the main app.
Crypto is not protected like a bank deposit and can lose most or all of its value.
Security and support
Revolut provides virtual cards, instant notifications, card freezing, biometric access and spending controls. These features are useful, but they cannot protect someone who authorises a fraudulent transfer or gives a criminal remote access to a device.
Support is primarily in-app. Higher plans receive priority service, while Ultra adds in-app calling. Customers wanting a branch or routine telephone service may prefer a conventional bank.

Which plan is best?
| User | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Occasional traveller | Standard |
| Converts €1,000–€3,000 monthly | Plus |
| Regular international traveller | Premium |
| Frequent traveller using bundled subscriptions | Metal |
| Premium global traveller | Ultra |
| Serious long-term investor | Specialist broker |
Most users should begin with Standard and upgrade only after identifying specific fees or subscriptions a paid plan will replace.
The Strategic Newb verdict
Revolut is one of Europe’s most capable financial applications. Standard offers excellent value, while Premium is the strongest balanced plan for regular travellers. Metal and Ultra require much heavier benefit usage.
Its weakness is that several products with different risks appear inside one interface. Customers must distinguish protected deposits from money-market funds, shares and cryptocurrency.
Used carefully, Revolut is an excellent international account and a useful supplement—or, for app-first customers, an alternative—to conventional banking. It earns 4.4 out of 5.
