Market snapshot: 29 October 2026. Source edition prepared at 13:10 CET. Market prices checked at 13:04 CET (12:04 UTC); OKX derivatives data at 13:05 CET. The figures and technical scenarios below describe this snapshot, not live market data.

Crypto is broadly lower today as renewed concern about expensive artificial-intelligence spending hit technology shares and weakened risk appetite. Bitcoin was near $80,047, down 1.31% over 24 hours, while 16 of 20 measured major non-stablecoin assets were also lower. The timing makes the tech selloff a plausible contributor, but it does not prove that one event caused every crypto move.

This is a different story from the Federal Reserve’s 28 October rate decision. The Fed’s hold and two hawkish dissents remain background risks, but the new information is the market reaction to Alphabet and Samsung results, the fall in Nasdaq futures, and heavier crypto derivatives activity. Bitcoin has also stabilized since the previous check, so the evidence supports a broad decline—not an accelerating crash.

Crypto market snapshot

CoinGecko, used as the consistent primary provider, reported total crypto capitalization of $2.678 trillion, down 5.01% over a rolling 24 hours, with $73.71 billion in 24-hour volume and Bitcoin dominance at 59.99%. Since the previous successful check at 04:02 CET, Bitcoin rose 0.24%, total capitalization fell 0.76%, volume increased 3.44%, and Bitcoin dominance gained 0.52 percentage points.

CoinPaprika independently placed Bitcoin at $80,072, within 0.03% of CoinGecko. It also showed the market falling, but its total-cap estimate was higher at $2.815 trillion and its 24-hour decline was much smaller at 0.79%. The datasets were not averaged. Providers cover different assets and use different supply and pricing methods, which can produce large capitalization differences even when they agree on direction.

Bitcoin was down 1.59% since 00:00 UTC on Kraken, a separate exchange-specific measure. The current UTC daily candle was still incomplete. Among major assets, Ether fell 1.38%, BNB 2.59%, XRP 2.37%, Solana 2.23%, TRON 0.12%, Bitcoin Cash 6.38%, and NEAR 5.37%. Hyperliquid rose 7.99%, showing that individual exceptions can exist during a broad decline.

The classification is therefore Broad decline: Bitcoin, both total-cap providers and 80% of the measured breadth pointed lower over 24 hours. Rising Bitcoin dominance also showed that altcoins generally absorbed more pressure than Bitcoin.

Why is crypto down today?

The strongest new evidence is a wider retreat from technology risk. Reuters reported that Nasdaq-100 futures fell about 1% after Alphabet shares dropped 10.4% in premarket trading. Investors focused on disappointing search-advertising results and faster AI-related cash burn. Samsung fell 4.1% despite strong results because its shareholder-return plan disappointed some investors, according to the Associated Press.

Crypto often trades like a high-volatility risk asset when investors reduce exposure to technology and growth investments. CoinDesk’s market report linked the drop toward $80,000 with the tech selloff and noted that AI-linked tokens were among the weaker groups. That timing supports a relationship, but the link remains plausible rather than conclusively causal.

The Fed is still relevant background. It held its target range at 3.75%–4.00% on Wednesday, while two officials preferred an immediate quarter-point increase. Chair Kevin Warsh did not commit to the December decision. Higher-for-longer rates can reduce demand for speculative assets because cash and bonds become more competitive. However, that decision was already covered in the previous article and is not presented here as a new explanation.

Leverage added pressure, but this was not a full panic

CoinDesk’s cross-market derivatives snapshot reported that crypto futures volume rose 21.8% to $198.8 billion, while open interest fell 1.9% and liquidations reached $337.4 million. Open interest is the value of futures positions that remain active. A liquidation is a forced position closure when a trader no longer has enough margin to support a leveraged trade. Falling open interest alongside lower prices suggests some positions were closed rather than fresh leverage rushing into the decline.

On OKX’s BTC-USDT perpetual contract, open interest was about 32,493 BTC, worth approximately $2.60 billion at the venue’s mark. The current eight-hour funding rate was positive at 0.0073%. Funding is the periodic payment between long and short perpetual-futures traders; positive funding means longs pay shorts. That positive rate shows positioning had not flipped into an extreme bearish imbalance on this venue.

The liquidation total is a marketwide estimate reported by CoinDesk, while the OKX figures cover only one exchange and one contract. They are not interchangeable.

Why is Bitcoin not falling faster?

Fresh institutional demand provided a counterweight. Farside Investors recorded $137.3 million of net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds on 28 October, the third consecutive inflow day. An ETF flow is the net dollar amount entering or leaving listed funds that hold Bitcoin exposure. Three-day inflows totaled about $423.6 million.

Ether funds moved the other way: Farside’s Ethereum table showed $21.4 million of net outflows on 28 October. That split fits the rise in Bitcoin dominance and Ether’s weaker relative position, but one day of flows is not enough to establish a durable trend.

Bitcoin also bounced after touching roughly $79,615 on Kraken. It was 0.24% above the previous check even though its rolling 24-hour change remained negative. That distinction matters: “down today” describes the rolling window, while the latest few hours show stabilization rather than continuous selling.

What beginners should watch next

The next test is whether Bitcoin can stay above the $79,100–$79,600 support zone. Support is an area where buyers previously appeared. A completed daily close below that zone, especially with stronger-than-normal volume, would make the bearish case more convincing.

On the upside, $81,800–$82,000 is the first important resistance zone. Resistance is an area where selling previously blocked advances. A close above it would be more meaningful than a brief intraday spike.

Investors should also watch the U.S. PCE inflation report and third-quarter GDP release due after this snapshot. These can change expectations for December interest rates. Until the data arrive, attributing every crypto move to the Fed or to technology earnings would overstate what is known.

FAQs

Is crypto crashing today?

No confirmed crash is visible in this snapshot. The decline is broad, but Bitcoin’s 24-hour loss was about 1.3%, it had stabilized since the prior check, and the completed daily candle had not closed below support.

Why did Bitcoin ETF inflows not push the price higher?

ETF demand is only one part of the market. Futures positioning, global risk appetite, existing holders, currency liquidity and selling in other venues can outweigh one day of fund inflows.

Could crypto go up later today?

Yes, but a rebound is not guaranteed. A recovery above $81,800–$82,000 would improve the daily picture. A close below $79,100 would instead confirm more downside pressure.

Bitcoin daily technical analysis: Bearish / transitional

Kraken’s completed 28 October UTC candle closed at $81,287.10, below the 20-day simple moving average ($81,834.77) and 50-day SMA ($81,887.67) but above the 200-day SMA ($73,066.04). The daily Wilder RSI(14) was 47.76, a neutral-to-weak reading, and volume was 0.91 times the prior 20-day average. The close did not reclaim resistance at $81,800–$82,000 and did not break support near $79,100.

The 29 October candle was incomplete at the data check. A completed close below $79,100 with rising volume would strengthen the bearish classification. A close above $82,000 would invalidate the immediate bearish setup and move the daily view toward neutral.

Bitcoin weekly technical analysis: Bullish recovery under pressure

The completed 19–25 October Kraken week closed at $80,048.50, above the 20-week SMA ($72,368.04) and 50-week SMA ($76,049.97). Weekly Wilder RSI(14) was 54.54, still above the neutral 50 level. That keeps the broader recovery structure alive even while the daily chart is weak.

The 26 October–1 November weekly candle was incomplete and trading near its opening level. A completed weekly close below roughly $79,100 would weaken the recovery and confirm a lower trading range. Holding support and later reclaiming $82,000 would preserve the bullish weekly structure. A daily correction can coexist with a still-constructive weekly trend; neither scenario guarantees a target.
