Bitvavo review for European cryptocurrency investors
AI-generated illustration of the topic.

Bitvavo has a simple proposition: make buying cryptocurrency with euros as straightforward as ordinary online banking.

That formula has made the Amsterdam-based platform particularly familiar in the Netherlands. It now serves a wider European market under a crypto-asset service provider licence granted by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, or AFM, under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation.

Bitvavo offers more than 400 crypto assets, a beginner-friendly app, a professional order-book interface, recurring purchases, staking, lending and direct euro payments. Its standard EUR-market trading fees begin at 0.15% for maker orders and 0.25% for taker orders—competitive pricing for occasional European investors.

However, low fees and regulation do not eliminate crypto risk. Bitvavo is not a bank, cryptocurrency is not protected by the EU deposit-guarantee system, and services such as staking, lending and margin trading do not receive the same MiCA protection as Bitvavo’s regulated custody, trading and transfer services.

This Bitvavo review separates those products and protections, so European users can understand what they are actually getting.

Fees, services and regulatory information in this review were checked on 4 October 2026. Availability and conditions can differ by country and may change.

What is Bitvavo?

Bitvavo is a Dutch cryptocurrency trading platform headquartered in Amsterdam. It combines two experiences within one account:

Its broader product range includes:

Bitvavo’s main advantage is that European customers can fund an account directly in euros without first buying a dollar stablecoin. This makes the platform especially practical for people using SEPA, iDEAL | Wero or Bancontact.

Is Bitvavo regulated in Europe?

Yes. Bitvavo B.V. holds a MiCA licence from the AFM under registration number 41000010.

The licence allows Bitvavo to provide three regulated crypto-asset services:

  1. Custody and administration of crypto assets
  2. Operation of a crypto-asset trading platform
  3. Transfer services for crypto assets

The European passporting framework allows Bitvavo to provide covered services across EU member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, subject to the relevant notifications and local availability.

MiCA creates requirements concerning governance, client information, conflicts of interest, operational resilience, custody and market conduct. AFM supervision is therefore materially stronger than a simple business registration.

What the MiCA licence does not mean

The licence does not mean:

Bitvavo’s own risk disclosure states that lending, margin trading, its price-guarantee service and staking are outside MiCA and other European sector-specific regulation. Bitvavo Custody B.V., which is involved in lending and margin services where applicable, is not itself a MiCA-regulated crypto-asset service provider.

That distinction is one of the most important facts in this review. A regulated platform can still offer individual products carrying different legal protections.

Bitvavo fees explained

Bitvavo uses a maker-taker fee model. A maker order adds liquidity to the order book. A taker order executes against an existing order.

Standard EUR-market trading fees

30-day trading volumeMaker feeTaker fee
€0+0.15%0.25%
€100,000+0.10%0.20%
€250,000+0.09%0.18%
€500,000+0.08%0.16%
€1 million+0.05%0.14%
€2.5 million+0.03%0.12%
€5 million+0.01%0.10%
€10 million+0.00%0.08%
€25 million+0.00%0.04%
€100 million+0.00%0.02%

Most retail users will remain in the first tier. On a €1,000 trade, the explicit fee would therefore be:

A limit order is not automatically a maker order. If it immediately matches an existing order, it removes liquidity and can be charged the taker fee. Pro Mode offers better control for users trying to place maker orders.

USDC and stablecoin fees

Bitvavo uses separate fee categories for USDC markets and selected stablecoin pairs.

Stablecoin trading volume does not count toward the rolling volume used to determine the standard crypto fee tier.

Euro deposit fees

Deposit methodCurrent Bitvavo fee
SEPA bank transfer0%
iDEAL \Wero0%
Bancontact0%
Apple Pay1%
Google Pay1%
Credit card1%
PayPal1%
EPS transfer1.75%

Payment availability and limits differ by country. The final fee is shown before the deposit is confirmed.

For most users, a free bank-transfer method is economically preferable to paying 1% for card or wallet convenience. A €1,000 credit-card deposit costs €10 before any trading fee is added.

Crypto deposits and withdrawals

Bitvavo does not charge for depositing supported crypto assets. Withdrawals incur an asset- and network-specific fee that can change with blockchain conditions and Bitvavo’s policy.

Before withdrawing, verify:

An incorrect blockchain transfer can be irreversible.

Basic interface versus Pro Mode

Basic interface

The standard Bitvavo interface is designed for simplicity. It suits users who want to choose an asset, enter a euro amount and confirm a purchase without navigating a professional trading screen.

Its strengths are:

The trade-off is reduced visibility into the order book and execution process. Before confirming, users should still examine the final price, fee and amount received.

Pro Mode

Pro Mode is designed for customers who want:

Pro Mode does not make trading less risky. It can also encourage unnecessary activity, which increases fees, tax complexity and behavioural errors.

For long-term investors, the best feature may simply be the ability to place a patient limit order rather than constantly trade.

Staking at Bitvavo

Bitvavo offers flexible and fixed-term staking.

Flexible staking

Flexible staking allows users to keep access to supported assets. The displayed reward is generally lower because Bitvavo absorbs liquidity and protocol timing risks.

Fixed staking

Fixed staking locks supported assets for a defined period. In exchange, the user may receive a higher displayed annual percentage yield.

Bitvavo states that users receive the APY displayed at opt-in, even when underlying protocol rewards fluctuate. Its pricing policy also explains that Bitvavo’s effective share of underlying rewards can vary:

That does not mean customers pay a separate visible charge. It reflects the difference between the underlying protocol yield and the rate Bitvavo displays to the user.

Staking risks include:

Bitvavo states that rewards may not be paid when protocol or validator failures prevent rewards from being collected. Staking is not a bank savings product and is not regulated under MiCA.

Lending at Bitvavo

Users may opt in to lend supported assets to institutional market makers through Bitvavo’s lending service.

Bitvavo states that:

The arrangement still creates counterparty, collateral, liquidity and platform risk. Collateral can fall in value during extreme market conditions, and a buffer is not the same as a government guarantee.

Because lending is outside MiCA, users should evaluate it separately from simply buying or holding crypto on the regulated trading platform.

Margin trading

Bitvavo also lists margin trading for supported assets and eligible users.

Standard trading fees still apply. The published hourly borrowing fee is currently 0.0023% for the listed margin assets, and an automatic liquidation carries a 2% liquidation fee.

An hourly rate of 0.0023% appears small, but it compounds economically over time and is charged on borrowed assets. More importantly, leverage magnifies losses and can force a position to close during volatility.

Margin trading is unsuitable for most beginners and should not be treated as an ordinary investment feature.

Is Bitvavo safe?

No centralised crypto exchange is risk-free. Bitvavo nevertheless provides a relatively strong security framework for a European retail platform.

Published measures include:

Bitvavo says the vast majority of digital assets are held through two specialist custody providers in cold storage. Those custody providers carry insurance of up to $755 million. This is a provider-level insurance figure, not a promise that each individual Bitvavo customer is insured for that amount.

Bitvavo Account Guarantee

The Bitvavo Account Guarantee may reimburse eligible users up to €100,000 when an unauthorised person gains access to an account and withdraws crypto or euros.

Important eligibility conditions include:

The guarantee generally does not cover:

Bitvavo explicitly states that its account guarantee is voluntary, is not insurance and is not part of an EU deposit-guarantee scheme.

The similar €100,000 number can be misleading. A bank deposit guarantee protects qualifying deposits following a bank failure under statutory rules. The Bitvavo guarantee is a contractual reimbursement programme for narrowly defined unauthorised-access incidents.

Does Bitvavo have deposit protection?

No. Cryptocurrency held through Bitvavo is not covered by the Dutch or European €100,000 bank deposit-guarantee system.

Users also should not assume that a euro balance is an ordinary insured bank deposit. The legal structure, safeguarding arrangements and applicable terms determine how funds are held, but safeguarding is not the same as statutory deposit insurance.

The safest wording is:

Bitvavo provides regulatory safeguards and a conditional account guarantee, but neither crypto assets nor ordinary Bitvavo balances should be described as bank deposits protected by the €100,000 deposit-guarantee scheme.

Bitvavo Proof of Reserves

Bitvavo publishes Proof of Reserves information for selected assets. Its displayed attestation covers assets including BTC, ETH, XRP, EUR, ADA, SOL, DOGE, VET, LINK, HBAR, SUI, FET and SHIB.

Customers can download proof that their balance was included in the relevant Merkle-tree snapshot. An independent accounting firm performs the attestation.

This is useful evidence that covered customer liabilities were backed by corresponding assets at the snapshot date. It is not equivalent to a complete financial-statement audit.

Proof of Reserves does not necessarily reveal:

Bitvavo’s current Proof of Reserves page states that attestations are annual. Users should therefore check the date and scope of the latest report rather than relying only on the headline reserve ratios.

Bitvavo advantages

Bitvavo disadvantages

Who is Bitvavo best for?

Bitvavo is particularly suitable for:

Who should avoid Bitvavo?

Bitvavo may not suit:

Bitvavo versus Crypto.com and Coinbase

Bitvavo’s clearest advantage is straightforward euro trading.

Compared with Crypto.com, Bitvavo generally presents a simpler fee structure and avoids making a platform token central to ordinary account benefits. Crypto.com offers a broader ecosystem, including a payment card and deeper on-chain integration, but this produces more product complexity.

Compared with Coinbase, Bitvavo’s entry-level EUR maker and taker fees can be attractive. Coinbase has a more global brand, broader institutional infrastructure and an extensive developer ecosystem, while Bitvavo feels more directly designed around European payment habits.

The best platform depends on:

Users should compare the final execution price—not only the advertised commission.

Is Bitvavo good for European investors?

For many European retail users, yes.

Bitvavo combines low entry-level trading fees, direct euro funding, a simple interface and a professional order book. Its AFM-issued MiCA licence gives customers clearer regulatory accountability than an offshore exchange operating without equivalent European authorisation.

The platform is especially compelling for a Dutch investor who wants to make recurring euro purchases and occasionally use limit orders through Pro Mode.

Its weaknesses are not hidden in the core exchange. They appear when users assume all services receive the same protection. Staking, lending and margin trading should each be treated as a separate risk decision. The account guarantee is valuable, but it is conditional and fundamentally different from statutory deposit insurance.

The Strategic Newb verdict

Bitvavo is one of the strongest crypto platforms for euro-based retail investors.

It succeeds because it does the fundamentals well: simple onboarding, direct European payment methods, low trading fees, a large asset selection and an advanced interface when users need more control. MiCA authorisation by the AFM strengthens its credibility for European customers.

The main caution is language. “Licensed,” “Proof of Reserves” and “up to €100,000 account guarantee” all sound reassuring, but none makes cryptocurrency risk-free. Users still face market risk, exchange risk and product-specific risk. The guarantee only covers qualifying unauthorised withdrawals, while staking, lending and margin products sit outside MiCA.

Bitvavo earns an editorial rating of 4.5 out of 5. It is an excellent euro-focused crypto exchange for beginners and cost-conscious European investors, provided they understand the boundary between regulation, contractual protection and genuine deposit insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bitvavo safe?

Bitvavo uses cold storage, multi-signature controls, two-factor authentication, address allowlisting, security audits, Proof of Reserves and a conditional account guarantee. These reduce risk but cannot eliminate crypto volatility, custody risk, fraud or platform failure.

Is Bitvavo regulated?

Yes. Bitvavo B.V. holds a MiCA crypto-asset service provider licence from the Dutch AFM under registration number 41000010. The licence covers custody and administration, operating a trading platform, and crypto transfers.

How much does Bitvavo charge?

Standard EUR-market fees start at 0.15% for maker orders and 0.25% for taker orders. Fees decline at higher 30-day trading volumes. Deposit and withdrawal fees depend on the chosen method and network.

Is depositing euros free?

Bitvavo currently charges no deposit fee for SEPA bank transfers, iDEAL | Wero and Bancontact. Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit cards and PayPal currently cost 1%, while EPS costs 1.75%.

Does Bitvavo guarantee €100,000?

Bitvavo may reimburse eligible users up to €100,000 for qualifying unauthorised withdrawals. Strict conditions apply. This voluntary account guarantee is not insurance and is not the statutory €100,000 bank deposit guarantee.

Is staking on Bitvavo safe?

Staking can generate crypto rewards, but it carries token-price, validator, protocol, lockup and platform risks. Bitvavo staking is not regulated under MiCA and should not be compared with a protected savings account.

Is Bitvavo suitable for beginners?

Yes. The basic interface, euro funding and recurring purchases make Bitvavo accessible. Beginners should still enable authenticator-app 2FA, avoid leverage and learn how withdrawal networks work.

Can I transfer crypto from Bitvavo to my own wallet?

Yes, for supported assets and networks. Network-specific fees and minimums apply. Always verify the address, network and any required memo, and consider making a small test transfer first.
