A Dutch bank account costs money. Revolut Premium costs more, but adds subscriptions, reward points and extra financial features. When do those benefits actually pay off?

Updated 24 October 2026. We use Rabobank Standaard as a concrete example of a Dutch current account. Other banks and packages have different fees. This compares products available in the Netherlands; it is not a ranking of every bank. The English version does not describe UK or US Revolut plans.

You pay a monthly fee to receive your salary, pay bills and withdraw cash. But what else do you get in return?

Revolut offers a different answer. Premium combines a bank account with services including NordVPN, Tinder Plus, reward points, investment features and daily payment of savings interest.

That sounds attractive. However, the more expensive account is not automatically better value. The result depends on which benefits you use, how much you save and which fees you incur.

Revolut Premium vs Rabobank: the main differences

ItemRabobank StandaardRevolut Premium
Subscription€3.60 a month€10.99 a month or €110 a year
Annual subscription cost€43.20€131.88 with monthly billing or €110 upfront
Debit-card spending in foreign currencies1.4% exchange-rate markupNo additional exchange fees, including weekends; Revolut uses its own rate
Cash withdrawalsFree at GeldmaatNo Revolut withdrawal fee up to €400 per rolling month
Foreign-currency withdrawals€3.50 plus 1.4% per withdrawalWithin the same withdrawal allowance; fees apply afterwards
Points on eligible card spendingNo comparable general points programme in this package1 RevPoint per €4
Partner subscriptionsNo comparable bundleServices including VPN, dating, fitness and creative tools

Above Revolut’s withdrawal allowance, the fee is 2%, with a €1 minimum per withdrawal. ATM operators may charge their own fees with either bank. Sources: Rabobank Standaard and Revolut plans.

With annual billing, Premium costs €66.80 more than Rabobank Standaard. Savings or benefits that you actually value must cover that difference.

What do you get with Revolut Premium?

The appeal largely comes from bundling services. The Dutch Premium page lists benefits including:

SubscriptionIncluded benefit
NordVPNStandard
TinderPlus
PerplexityPro
PicsartPro
HeadspaceAccess through the partner benefit
FreeleticsAccess to the digital coach
Sleep CyclePremium
DuolingoSuper Duolingo

Activation and partner terms apply, and the selection can change. A subscription only represents a financial saving if you would otherwise pay for it. Source: Revolut Premium.

If Premium lets you cancel two existing subscriptions costing €8 a month in total, you save €96 a year: more than the €66.80 difference compared with Rabobank Standaard. Someone who would never buy those services independently does not save €96. They gain additional features with a personal value.

Financial Times and airport lounges: check the plan

Under the current Dutch terms, the regular Financial Times benefit belongs to Metal and Ultra, not Premium. Metal includes Standard Digital, while Ultra includes Premium Digital. Assess any personalised offer separately. Source: Financial Times benefit.

Premium offers discounted airport lounge access. You still pay per visit. Unlimited access is listed under Ultra. The discount’s value depends on the airport, entry price and how often you visit. Source: plan comparison.

RevPoints: rewards for everyday payments

Premium earns 1 RevPoint per €4 of eligible card spending. Points can be redeemed for benefits including airline miles and accommodation discounts. Source: Premium.

Eligible monthly card spendingMonthly pointsAnnual points
€5001251,500
€1,0002503,000
€1,5003754,500
€2,0005006,000

This is an extra compared with an account without similar rewards. However, points are not fixed cashback. They cannot be exchanged for cash and expire after three years. Exclusions include transfers, cash withdrawals and financial transactions such as crypto purchases. Receiving a salary or transferring rent does not automatically earn points. Source: RevPoints terms.

Estimate their value by dividing the actual saving on something you would otherwise buy by the points redeemed. Compare hotel prices elsewhere too: a discount on a higher starting price may disappoint.

Be careful with spare-change round-ups. That feature buys points with your own money. It is different from earning rewards on eligible card spending. Source: RevPoints.

Savings: daily interest versus the annual result

It is incorrect to say Dutch banks do not pay interest. Rabobank currently pays 0% on its ordinary current account, but does pay savings interest. ABN AMRO also lists 0% for its euro current account. Sources: Rabobank current-account interest and ABN AMRO rates.

With Revolut, the interest discussed here requires money in Instant Access Savings, known in Dutch as Dagelijks Sparen. It is not automatic interest on every current-account balance. The Dutch product document dated 15 October 2026 lists:

Individual euro savings accountVariable annual interest
Revolut Standard2.50% on the first €2,500; 1.25% on the excess
Revolut Premium2.50% on the first €5,000; 1.50% on the excess

Joint and children’s accounts have additional rules. Promotional offers may differ. Source: savings product information.

Rabobank currently lists 1.60% on the first €10,000 in its Rabo SpaarRekening. Source: Rabobank savings account.

What does €5,000 in savings earn?

Assuming unchanged rates, before tax and excluding compounding:

AccountGross annual interest
Rabobank SpaarRekening€80
Revolut Standard€93.75
Revolut Premium€125

Premium earns €45 more than Rabobank in this example. That does not fully cover the €66.80 extra subscription cost. Against free Revolut Standard, the interest advantage is €31.25, while Premium costs €110 a year. Upgrading solely for interest is therefore not worthwhile at €5,000.

Revolut calculates and pays interest daily, subject to a minimum payout threshold of one cent. Rabobank credits ordinary savings interest in January. Daily payment makes returns visible sooner and can add a small compounding benefit. But 2.50% a year remains an annual rate. Sources: Revolut savings terms and Rabobank savings rates.

Compare the same currency and product type. Money-market funds, where offered, are investments rather than ordinary deposits. A higher US-dollar interest rate also introduces currency risk for someone whose expenses are in euros.

Investing: cheaper trading is not the same as cost-free investing

Premium currently includes five commission-free orders per rolling month. Beyond that allowance, the opened Dutch help page lists €1 per order. Selected ETP purchases through investment plans may be commission-free. Source: current trading fees.

Revolut removed custody fees for shares and ETFs in the EEA. Other costs may remain, including fund charges, spreads, currency costs and applicable levies. Source: custody-fee removal.

Rabo Zelf Beleggen charges 0.06% per quarter for basic services on assets up to €100,000, with a €5 quarterly minimum. An ordinary share order on Euronext Amsterdam, Brussels or Paris costs €5 plus 0.05%. Selected recurring ETF purchases have a different tariff of 0.1%. Source: Rabo Zelf Beleggen.

Revolut may appeal to investors placing regular small share orders. Someone buying just one ETF periodically should also compare free Standard and other brokers. Check the product selection, exchange, execution and transfer options. Included orders are not a reason to trade more often.

Crypto: convenience with different protections

Premium’s ordinary Revolut crypto service currently generally charges 0.99% per transaction. Minimum fees can make small trades relatively expensive. The quoted total combines the price and applicable fee. Source: crypto fees.

Revolut X is a separate trading platform with published maker fees of 0% and taker fees of 0.09%. These differ from the ordinary crypto feature. Check availability and eligibility separately. Source: Revolut X.

Rabobank now offers an iShares Bitcoin ETP through Rabo Zelf Beleggen. This is an exchange-traded product tracking Bitcoin, not Bitcoin you can send to your own wallet. Its product page says other cryptoassets are not currently offered. Source: Rabobank Bitcoin ETP.

Revolut therefore offers more direct crypto-trading options. That does not make crypto a protected deposit. Its crypto terms exclude deposit protection and the specified investor compensation. You can lose your entire crypto investment. Source: crypto terms.

How safe is Revolut compared with a Dutch bank?

Current accounts and savings

At Rabobank, eligible deposits are protected together up to €100,000 per person, per bank under the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. This is not €100,000 for each account. Source: Rabobank savings account.

Eligible deposits at Revolut Bank UAB fall under Lithuanian deposit protection. Current savings terms also describe the possibility of savings held through a trust account with Deutsche Bank, with the relevant German scheme applying. Check where your funds are held and include other deposits at the same bank. A Dutch IBAN does not determine which protection scheme applies. Source: Revolut savings terms.

Investments

Revolut Securities Europe UAB separates customer assets from its own assets. Lithuanian investor compensation of up to €22,000 may additionally apply where assets cannot be returned, subject to conditions. This does not cover market losses. Source: investment protection.

The Dutch investor-compensation scheme has a conditional maximum of €20,000, also addressing the failure to return entrusted assets. Source: DNB.

A portfolio above those amounts is not automatically unprotected: asset segregation is the first layer of protection. Compensation is an additional mechanism. Crypto does not have these protections.

Support and practical access

Rabobank offers telephone support and branches. Premium offers priority in-app support. That difference may matter more than points if you lose access to your account. Sources: Rabobank and Premium.

Deposit protection covers bank failure. It is not blanket insurance against phishing or every fraudulent payment. One app can be convenient; a separate backup account may still be useful during an outage or access problem.

Travel: where Premium can quickly add value

Premium offers unlimited currency exchange without extra exchange fees, including weekends. Rabobank charges a 1.4% markup on debit-card spending in foreign currencies. Underlying exchange rates may differ. Sources: Premium plan and Rabobank exchange rates.

Spending €5,000 a year in foreign currencies incurs €70 in explicit Rabobank markup. That slightly exceeds the €66.80 annual price difference between the packages. If you keep Rabobank, Premium becomes an additional €110 subscription: avoiding a 1.4% markup alone then requires approximately €7,857 in spending to break even. Exchange-rate differences and other benefits are excluded.

Travel insurance: read your own policy

Dutch help pages list travel insurance with Premium. The plan must be active when booking and throughout the trip. Conditions apply to paying through Revolut. Premium lists up to 30 days of cover per trip. Check your current policy and insured travellers before cancelling existing cover. Sources: travel eligibility and coverage.

When is Revolut Premium actually worth it?

Count benefits you use:

Subscription savings + avoided banking fees + additional net savings interest + redeemed rewards − additional subscription costs.

A hypothetical example of someone replacing Rabobank Standaard entirely:

ItemAnnual benefit
Cancelled subscriptions already being used€72
Avoided 1.4% markup on €3,000€42
Additional gross interest on €5,000 in savings€45
Premium’s additional cost versus Rabo Standaard−€66.80
Calculated advantage€92.20

This assumes unchanged rates and fees. Taxes, exchange-rate differences, points, insurance and withdrawal fees are excluded. Rewards without a fixed cash value are not counted upfront as guaranteed profit.

The verdict: choose by usage, not the longest benefits list

Revolut Premium is especially attractive if you use several included services, regularly spend in foreign currencies and route everyday card purchases through Revolut.

Rabobank Standaard remains cheaper in fixed subscription costs and offers different ways to contact the bank. A Dutch current account can also be combined with a separate savings provider or broker.

Saying Rabobank gives nothing back is too broad: you pay for payment services and can earn interest in a separate savings account. Premium does offer a clearer combination of rewards and subscriptions.

The decisive question is how many existing costs Premium replaces. If it replaces subscriptions and foreign-exchange charges you would otherwise pay, the more expensive account can ultimately cost less.

Frequently asked questions

Is Revolut Premium cheaper than Rabobank?

Not in subscription fees. Premium costs €110 annually upfront, versus €43.20 for Rabo Standaard. Used subscriptions, avoided currency fees and other benefits can offset the difference.

Does your ordinary Revolut balance earn interest?

The rates discussed here apply to Instant Access Savings. You must place money in that product; it is not automatic interest on all current-account funds.

Are RevPoints the same as cashback?

No. They are loyalty points with conditions and a variable redemption value. They cannot be redeemed for cash.

Does Premium include Financial Times?

Under the checked Dutch terms, the regular benefit belongs to Metal and Ultra. Assess personalised offers separately.

Are crypto and investments as safe as savings?

No. Deposit protection does not cover market losses. Securities and crypto also have different custody risks and protection frameworks.
